Washington Elementary School – Evanston, Illinois

Washington Elementary School - Evanston, Illinois

For a few years, I have always wanted to photograph this building. One Sunday morning last winter, I finally got around to it.

Built in 1901, Washington School is the largest elementary school in District 65

As with most of my HDRs, these ones were composed of three shots and tonemapped in Photomatix 4.0. I am getting better at choosing what kind of subject will turn into a good HDR, and I’m also acquiring some Photomatix skills.

The Moon In The Waning Gibbous Phase

Exposure – 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture – F/4.0
Focal Length – 200 mm
ISO – 100
Lens – EF70-200mm f/4L USM

I always wanted to get a shot of the moon, but it never quite worked. It was either the sky, or the camera wouldn’t focus, or just me sometimes. I’m pretty happy with this shot. I had to do a little bit of color adjustment in Lightroom, but nothing drastic.

If you have any tips, please post them in the comments.

Chicago 2011 Blizzard – Lake Shore Drive Shut Down

This is the situation of my car as of this morning, and this is as close I’m going to get to the outside world today.

Go Chicago!

Lake Shore Drive was a disaster area overnight, as motorists found themselves stranded for up to 12 hours and ended up in the hospital. Before the city shut down the Drive, traffic had been crawling; taking about an hour to travel only a mile. Many cars were without a full tank of gas, and ended up running out. At some point people just started abandoning their cars, most people were rescued by firefighters throughout the night and taken to hospitals.
